Sean O’Malley’s bantamweight title defense is set for UFC 306 at the Sphere on September 14.

The event marks the second celebration of Mexican Independence Day, with Las Vegas again serving as the host city. However, this time the Octagon will be situated in the distinctive Sphere venue, rather than the T-Mobile Arena used the previous year.

Ahead of the event, UFC CEO Dana White has assured fans of an unprecedented spectacle. This week, White confirmed that O’Malley will face Merab Dvalishvili in the main event. This announcement was made in a video posted to the UFC’s social media on Friday night.

O’Malley Aims for Another Successful Title Defense Against Dvalishvili

When these fighters enter the Octagon within the distinctive atmosphere of the Sphere, O’Malley intends to make Dvalishvili the next challenger to fall during his title reign.

O’Malley (18-1, 1 NC) secured the 135-pound championship last August in a spectacular fashion, finishing the UFC 292 event in Boston with a stunning second-round knockout of the long-standing champion Aljamain Sterling. This victory ended “Funk Master’s” historic reign and opened the door for Sterling's teammate to seek redemption.

After a wait to see “Sugar” resolve unfinished business with Marlon Vera at UFC 299 in Miami this past March, Dvalishvili (17-4) now has his first opportunity to claim a championship in mixed martial arts.

The Georgian fighter earned this shot by winning 10 consecutive bouts and remaining undefeated since 2018. Recently, he has triumphed over three former champions, securing victories over José Aldo, Petr Yan, and Henry Cejudo, which solidified his position as the top contender in the bantamweight division.
